JavaScript Programming in Examples and Exercises

Alexey Vasiliev

  • Programming
  • JavaScript

A JavaScript textbook for web development from scratch: from variables and functions to objects, OOP, events and working with page elements. Each topic comes with worked examples and the author’s explanations.

Key ideas

  1. In JavaScript functions are ordinary values: they’re passed, returned and stored.
  2. Objects and prototypes are the basis of OOP in the language; classes are convenient syntax on top of them.
  3. An interface is built on events: the page reacts to the user’s actions.
  4. Closures and scope explain most of the code’s “strange” behavior.

How I apply it

I write website frontends and interfaces for AI bots in JavaScript and TypeScript — this site is built with Next.js.

Where and how I applied it

  • Demo · Website widget · vanilla JS · one line

    AI consultant widget

A web component in plain JavaScript inside Shadow DOM: open, question and lead events go to the site — to analytics goals or CRM.

  • Demo · Website widget · vanilla JS · leads

    Quiz lead form

A quiz without frameworks: branching questions, autosave to localStorage, embedded as one file.

  • Demo · Web app · PWA · vanilla JS

    Offline courier app

A courier app in JavaScript without frameworks: the customer signs with a finger on Canvas with Pointer Events, photos are compressed right on the phone.

Hands-On APIs for AI and Data Science

    Ryan Day

A practical book on building an API for data and connecting AI to it. The running project is a FastAPI service with a database and documentation, then an SDK for it, using the API in analytics and, finally, LangChain agents that call the API themselves.

Server Applications in Python, Django, Flask and FastAPI

    R. S. Bukharev

The path of server-side development in Python, from sockets and protocols to architecture and launch on a server. Django, Flask and FastAPI are covered through real projects: a CRM system, a Telegram bot with server-side logic, a REST API for a mobile app and a WebSocket chat. Separate chapters cover caching and scaling, Docker and Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite and MongoDB, and security: password hashing, JWT and OAuth 2.0, protection against SQL injection, XSS and CSRF, TLS.
